The Grand 1894 Opera House meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
The mission of The Grand 1894 Opera House is to enrich the cultural life
of Galveston and the Gulf Coast Region. The Grand fulfills its mission
through the following goals:
-Restore, improve, and manage the historic Grand 1894 Opera House
complex, (which includes the theatre and the attached apartment
building) as a leading performance venue, meeting current and evolving
needs of performing artists and audiences.
-Present high-quality touring artists in theater, music, dance, opera,
children’s programming and other performance genres that engage and
enrich the lives of diverse communities.
-Pursue partnerships and collaborations that assist in bolstering the
Galveston economy.
-Foster best business practices as befits “The Official Opera House of
the State of Texas.”

Today,
an average of forty professional productions are sponsored by and presented at
The Grand annually. The variety of
programming includes artists in the fields of theatre, comedy, dance, opera,
and popular music. The Grand has earned
a significant reputation for quality productions by featuring well-known
artists. Audiences in the past have
enjoyed performances by John Philip Sousa, Anna Pavlova, William Jennings
Bryan, Sarah Bernhardt, Tex Ritter, and more recently, Gladys Knight, Tommy
Tune, Lyle Lovett, Hal Holbrook, Willie Nelson and Itzhak Perlman. Annually, over 90,000 people enjoy
productions such as Kinky Boots, Spamalot, 42nd Street, Stomp, and Aida Cuevas. Additionally, the Galveston Symphony and
other arts and educational organizations throughout Texas use The Grand's distinctive facilities
for a variety of programs. Other activities during non-performance times
include tours of the structure and use of spaces for meetings, conventions and
receptions. All of these activities
reinforce the relevance of The Grand's position, assuring almost 200 days of
use annually.
In
addition to its regular programming, The Grand presents the Harris L. Kempner
children's series, "Serious Fun," and the annual Grand Kids Festival,
both of which focus on students, children and families. The “Serious Fun” series features
professional touring companies dedicated to classic productions such as The Ugly
Duckling and Charlotte's Web as well as shows taken from
contemporary children’s literature as reinforcement to school curriculum. The Grand provides in school workshops to increase
knowledge of and interest in the arts while improving the connection between
literature and a live performance. The Grand Kids Festival is designed to expand
children’s involvement in the arts by featuring hands-on arts, education and
activity booths and entertainment stages focusing on a variety of ethnically
diverse performances. The festival includes a free, week long children's theater residency and a week-long theater residency is also offered in the summer. More recently, The
Grand has taken on the ARToberFEST and now organizes this wonderful arts event
on Postoffice Street which features over 125 artists from throughout the US . These outreach programs are an extension of the
educational and cultural value afforded the community.
