Small Steps Nurturing Center meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
To provide an exemplary early childhood program to instill and foster the social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth of economically at-risk children and their families.
Year, State Incorporated:
1995, TX
Small Steps operates five days a week, nine months each year (plus a summer program in June), at no financial cost to the families we serve. Language development is at the center of Small Steps’ educational
experience, so all learning activities focus on expanding students’ vocabulary and learning oral and written language constructions. Teachers incorporate science and math concepts and critical thinking skills into each school day. We work to teach our students acceptance, self-esteem, self-control, positive communication, problem solving, and delayed gratification through our social and emotional health program. We employ and contract with therapists to deliver therapeutic services and in-classroom support. Small Steps provides our students breakfast, lunch, and a snack and access to a safe space to play outdoors. Our program includes weekly chapel, prayer before meals, and daily staff devotionals. Small Steps offers a robust parent education program to empower, educate, and build strong connections with students’ families.
In the 2024-2025 school year, Small Steps is serving approximately 225 economically at-risk students and their families across two campuses: 150 students at our Fifth Ward campus and 75 students at our Gulfton campus. In August of 2024, Small Steps completed an expansion and renovation of our Fifth Ward campus, which added four new classrooms and other program service and administrative spaces to the campus. Small Steps will open the new classroom wing in phases beginning in the 2024-2025 school year. Once the four new classrooms are enrolled, Small Steps will serve approximately 255 students annually.
