Also Known As:
Literacy Council of Tyler

Since it has been shown that adult literacy services are critical for economic development and also for children's success in school, Literacy Council of Tyler provides the following services to adults: Basic Literacy, GED Test Preparation, and English as a Second Language. LCOT enrolls about 2,300 adult students every year and provides services at about 16 different sites in the Smith County area. Instruction is provided at no cost to the adult student, but students do pay a $30 book fee. LCOT has been providing these services since 1990 and has received local, state, and national recognition for its programs. Each new student spends six hours in enrollment. During this time, assessment is completed so that the student and the teacher will know the nature of the educational gaps. Most students are put on a 2-6 week waiting list prior to receiving instruction. Once a student does receive instruction he/she may continue to participate as long as he/she maintains 75% attendance and continues to show progress on a standardized test.
