Northern Illinois Food Bank meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
Northern Illinois Food Bank’s mission is to provide nutritious food and resources for our neighbors, with dignity, equity and convenience through partnerships and innovation with a vision of everyone in Northern Illinois having the food they need to thrive.
Year, State Incorporated:
1982, IL
Since 1983, with the support of the community, Northern Illinois Food Bank has worked diligently to improve nutritious food access and increase food security for neighbors across 13 counties. Through the
collaboration of over 900 network members, dedicated staff, volunteers, and food and fund donors, the Food Bank serves over half a million neighbors every month and distributed 90 million meals in the past year.
Their headquarters is located at the West Suburban Center in Geneva, and they maintain satellite centers in Rockford (Northwest Center), Joliet (South Suburban Center) and Lake Forest (North Suburban Center). All locations serve as food storage and processing centers for Food Bank programs and distribution hubs for food delivery and pickup by member agencies to serve their communities. Individuals, corporate and community groups are welcomed at all centers to engage in their mission through various volunteer opportunities.
Member agencies, which include food pantries, soup kitchens and group homes account for 84% of the food distributed by the Food Bank. Membership in the Food Bank network provides agencies with multiple access points to food to serve their neighbors, including Agency Express, an online ordering system and Food Bank truck deliveries. Agencies also have the option of shopping at any of the centers to pick up more food in between deliveries.
Food Bank managed direct-to-neighbor distribution programs provide an additional point of food access to neighbors who may need to supplement their nutritional needs through other food assistance resources beyond what the traditional food pantry network offers. This includes children, seniors, those with chronic diseases and people facing barriers to access such as transportation or stigma.
For the year ended June 30, 2023, Northern Illinois Food Bank's program expenses were:
| Contributed food distributed | $128,057,088 |
| Food Bank operations | $38,107,504 |
