The Food Bank of North Alabama is a non-profit corporation that primarily distributes food in support of North Alabama’s needy, ill, children and seniors. The Food Bank also employs proactive solutions to end hunger and poverty by supporting a more sustainable, locally based food system.
The Food Bank was founded in 1984 by a group of volunteers working with the Huntsville Madison County Senior Center who wanted to ensure that food gleaned from food suppliers did not go to waste and instead helped residents at risk of hunger meet their most basic needs. The Food Bank helps about 100 grocery stores with their food rescue programs, ensuring millions of pounds of food aren't thrown away.
Today, the Food Bank of North Alabama distributes more than 15 million pounds of food annually to help reach the estimated 149,550 food-insecure residents in its 11-county service area.
The Food Bank of North Alabama provides food to more than 200 partners including food pantries, shelters, recovery and rehabilitation centers and soup kitchens, making it the largest non-profit in North
Alabama fighting hunger.
And the Food Bank of North Alabama has begun doing more direct services to ensure everyone struggling with food insecurity is reached. The Food Bank operates programs specifically for children: weekend backpacks, school pantries, Kids Harvest and Farm to School; and programs for senior residents.
