Feeding America, Kentucky's Heartland meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland gathers and distributes food in 42 Kentucky counties to feed its neighbors in need through local community partnerships.
Year, State Incorporated:
1982, KY
Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland is a regional Feeding America-affiliated food bank located in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Through its network of 230+ partner agencies, such as food pantries and soup kitchens, it serves more than 223,500 people in 42 Kentucky counties each year.
Donated Food/Grocery Distribution
The nonprofit receives donations of food and grocery items from multiple sources – including food production facilities, farmers, and grocery stores – and distributes them through its partner agencies.
Serving Up Fresh Program
The nonprofit assists in securing fresh produce from September through May to give to food insecure individuals and families.
Farms to Food Banks
This statewide program helps cover the costs to harvest, package, and transport fresh, edible agricultural products that local farmers are unable to sell due to minor blemishes, size discrepancies, or overproduction. The produce is then distributed by agency partners, providing neighbors with healthy, nutritious food.
Food Rescue
The nonprofit partners with retailers like Dollar General, Food Lion, Kroger, Walmart, and Sam’s Club to pick up products like meat, bakery items, dairy, and produce that don’t meet the required standards for retail sale but are still safe for distribution and consumption.
Mobile Food Pantry
Mobile Food Pantries deliver fresh foods and non-perishable staples for direct distribution to under-resourced communities.
Purchasing Cooperative
The nonprofit leverages its ability to purchase and store large quantities of food at discounted prices then offers those purchases to its network of food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters at costs much lower than grocery store prices. Agency partners use these foods to supplement their inventory, balance distributions, and feed neighbors.
Government Commodity Distribution
The nonprofit distributes 100% American-grown USDA foods to low-income families and seniors at no cost through the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program.
BackPack Progam
This program provides 12-15 kid-friendly food items to school-age children who are facing hunger, helping to bridge gaps in nutrition during times when school meals aren’t available, such as weekends and school breaks.
Disaster Relief
The nonprofit partners with local and state disaster relief agencies to provide emergency food in times of disaster.
