Meals on Wheels for Fort Collins meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
The mission of Meals on Wheels for Fort Collins is to support the dignity, well-being and independence of primarily homebound older adults and eligible clients in our community with a hot, nutritious meal and social interaction for up to 5 days of a week.
Year, State Incorporated:
1971, CO
Meals on Wheels for Fort Collins
(MOW-FC) was established in 1969 to provide home-delivered meal services to
homebound persons in need in the Fort Collins area. Poudre Valley Hospitals (PVH) dietary staff
has been planning and preparing our meals for over 49 years, ensuring optimum
nutrition for our clients. It incorporates the following three characteristics
found in virtually all meals on wheels programs: 1) Home-delivered, hot meals
prepared according to nutritional guidelines, 2) Conversation and social
contact with friendly and compassionate volunteers, and 3) Safety and
well-being assessments performed with each delivery.
Elderly and disabled adults who are
homebound often experience limitations such as reduced abilities to shop for
food and prepare meals due to aging, disability or mental illness. Such limitations can create new or exacerbate
existing nutrition related risk factors, increasing the likelihood of hospital
stays and permanent placement in assisted living facilities. Risk factors related to malnutrition include
the following: food insecurity, poverty, inadequate food intake, social
isolation, dementia, depression, dependency, functional disability, presence of
diet related acute or chronic diseases or conditions, medication side effects,
advanced age, minority status, rural geographic areas and living alone. Since its beginning, it has been MOW-FCs
mission to provide home-delivered, nutritionally balanced meals in order to
help homebound adults remain in their own homes living independently.
