Stated Purpose
"to improve the quality of life and of people who are blind, visually impaired or with other disabilities."
Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind (GDFB) provides guide and service dogs, free of charge, to people who are blind, visually impaired or who have other disabilities, and seek the increased independence, mobility and companionship that an assistance dog can provide. Volunteer families called "puppy raisers" raise the puppies in their homes for one year. Puppies are then returned to the organization to begin their formal training. Students come to GDFB from all across the United States and Canada. There are training options available for blind individuals on campus (in residence) at GDFB's 10-acre campus, or training entirely in a student's home environment. Over the course of the training, students and their dogs bond and learn how to work together as a team. They also learn about the proper care for their dog from grooming to exercising to veterinary care. Assistance and after-care services are available to deal with any issues or concerns after a team graduates from our programs. GDFB takes steps to promote the use of assistance dogs throughout the United States, build public awareness for the work they do, and teach people about etiquette and how to interact with a person who has a guide or service dog. The organization's website features news and information about guide and service dogs and the essential access laws that give individuals the right to be accompanied by their guide or service dog everywhere the public is allowed.
