Friends Without a Border meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
"to provide free, high-quality healthcare in areas of dire need in Southeast Asia."
Year, State Incorporated:
1996, NY
Friends Without a Border (FWAB) promotes sustainable solutions to health care in developing countries of Southeast Asia. The organization aims to provide high-quality medical care to children in a compassionate environment; educate families and health care professionals; and improve the health, nutrition, and hygiene of local communities through outreach programs and home care. FWAB currently operates Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) in Laos, which is the only provider of free healthcare in northern Laos. LFHC has an outpatient department, inpatient department, emergency room, neonatal unit, high-acuity unit, and surgical theater. It also offers specialized clinics that are unique to the country, such as development and thalassemia, as well as epilepsy, nephrology, and orthopedics clinics added in 2023. LFHC’s allied health services include pharmacy, radiology, laboratory, and nutrition. The outreach department makes homecare visits, assisting families who might otherwise not have access to medical services. The prevention department was launched in 2023 to combat the country’s malnutrition that is the highest rate in Southeast Asia. Following the F1000 (first 1,000) days principle (from conception to 2 years of age) and partnering with UNICEF, its pilot project implements various community interventions to improve detection, management, and monitoring of children with malnutrition.
