Wild Animal Sanctuary (WAS) reports that it operates a 724 acre refuge in Colorado for more than 450 lions, tigers, bears, wolves and other large rescued carnivores that were confiscated from illegal or abusive situations. The organization reports providing the animals rehabilitation and life-long care so that they can live and roam freely in large acreage natural habitats, while also working to educate the public via elevated walkways about the captive wildlife crisis. In 2015, WAS states that it rescued 49 animals including 22 African lions, 5 grizzly bears, 4 tigers, 3 mountain lions, 3 leopards, 3 Syrian brown bears, 3 black bears, 2 bobcats, 2 ostriches, 1 coyote, and 1 emu. In addition, the organization reports that it constructed 10 new 15-20 acre natural habitats complete with underground dens.
