Stated Purpose:
Her Justice stands with women living in poverty in New York City by recruiting and mentoring volunteer lawyers to provide free legal help to address individual and systemic legal barriers.
Year, State Incorporated:
1992, NY
Founded in 1992, Her Justice stands with women living in poverty in New York City by recruiting and mentoring volunteer lawyers to provide free legal help to address individual and systemic legal barriers in the areas of family, matrimonial and immigration law.
For 30 years, advancing economic justice has been core to the work of Her Justice. Women living in poverty rely on the civil justice system to access basic rights. The system was designed to be accessible without a lawyer, but it does not always serve well those who are alone and unrepresented. Her Justice stands with them by:
Providing critical free legal help to women who couldn’t otherwise afford it, empowering them to take control of the things they care about most – family, finances, safety, and autonomy; and
Advocating for important reform at the policy level to address inefficiencies and inequities within the system that negatively impact our clients.
Every year, Her Justice channels thousands of private sector pro bono attorneys and other experts into the civil justice system, breaking down barriers built into the system that reinforce and exacerbate gender, racial and economic imbalances.
For the year ended June 20, 2022, Her Justice's program expenses were:
