Violence Intervention Program, Inc. meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
To lead Latinx victims of domestic violence to safety, empower them to live free of violence and reach and sustain their full potential. We pursue our mission by raising community awareness, engaging in activism and providing culturally specific services.
Year, State Incorporated:
1994, NY
Founded in East Harlem by grassroots Black and Latina activists in 1984, Violence Intervention Program (VIP) offers healing, housing, advocacy, education, and economic justice to thousands of survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their children each year. As the only organization in NYC focused on providing culturally specific services to Latinx and immigrant survivors—as well as leadership and staff that reflect the communities we serve—VIP has been a trusted community resource for decades.
Located in low-income Latinx neighborhoods in East Harlem, Queens, and Bronx, VIP provides case management, advocacy and critical support services, as well as trauma-informed individual counseling services and empowerment-based support groups to build strength, community, and foster healing. VIP’s housing programs, which include an emergency shelter and longer-term transitional housing, provide safe refuge to 200+ survivors and children fleeing violence each year while empowering families to rebuild their lives. Our innovative Sexual Violence Project addresses complex sexual trauma and our Economic Justice Program supports survivors’ long-term financial stability - from small business development to education and job preparation. Our Child and Adolescent Program provides trauma prevention and early intervention therapy to children impacted by violence. Our newest housing program prevents homelessness by increasing safety in survivors’ homes such as installing alarm systems and completing security related repairs and lock changes. Finally, VIP's robust outreach team, in partnership with VIP Promotoras, serve as a bridge to survivors who may never otherwise access services and offer community engagement and education to thousands.
Last year, VIP directly served 1800+ survivors and reached community members through community education and outreach initiatives. We fielded over 4,500 hotline calls, conducted individual counseling sessions for more than 1,000 clients and provided over 300 clients with emergency cash, food, and transportation.
While the majority of VIP clients are low-income Latina mothers and their children, VIP serves all survivors inclusive of sexual orientation, gender identity, immigration status, language, income, or cultural background. All of our services are free, confidential, and available in Spanish and English, with telephonic interpretation available for other language speakers.
Working in collaboration with a diverse group of agencies and institutions throughout New York City enables VIP to provide a wide-range of services outside our scope, including educational, financial, vocational, employment outreach, health, legal, and housing services.
