Southeast Missouri Food Bank meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
"to
offer and distribute food and food stuffs of all kinds and
descriptions, including beverages, and to
distribute groceries and grocery products to the indigent and needy and
to do all actions necessary, suitable or proper for the accomplishment
of this benevolent purpose and to exercise any and all powers granted to
Missouri Not for Profit Corporations. The
mission of SMFB is to end hunger and leverage the power of food to
build a healthy community. We envision a community in which everyone
has access to sufficient nutritious food."
Year, State Incorporated:
1985, MO
Since the pandemic, SMFB provides hunger relief to approximately 85,000 individuals every month through innovative programs and services. At the core of services is the hunger relief network, which includes 145 member charitable agencies, serving the food insecure. The USDA Commodity Supplement Food Program provides nutritious foods to 5,350 senior citizens who live in low income households. The Emergency Food Assistance Program supplements the diets of income-eligible residents by providing them with emergency food and nutrition assistance at no cost. The Retail Store Donation Program partner secures nutritious food that is close-dated, slightly ripe, or too plentiful. Rapid distribution among member agencies and mobile pantries serves the hungry and avoids food waste. Farm to Food Bank engages a network of farms to provide clients with fresh, local produce. Truck to Table Mobile Food Pantry program employs refrigerated trucks to expand food assistance service hours and provide food after 5 PM on weekdays and on Saturdays so families that are considered part of the working poor can provide for themselves and their families. Distributions typically serve 200 or more families. BackPacks For Friday program meets the needs of hungry children and their families at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and holiday vacations. SMFB addresses childhood hunger in our community by partnering with area school districts, volunteer organizations, and sponsors to create awareness and generate funds. The program serves more than 1,000 children identified as "at risk of food insecurity." A Better Childhood (ABC) Mobile Food Pantry helps alleviate child hunger in Southeast Missouri through the provision of food to children and their families at safe and familiar environments (such as schools, community centers, and churches) in the most impoverished counties. ABC serves more than 500 children and their families every month. Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) seeks to make the application for food stamps benefits easier by reaching those in need where they are located. SMFB travels to partner agencies and mobile food pantries in 16 counties in an effort to reach those not yet served.
In 2018, Southeast Missouri Food Bank became the first food bank in the Nation with Energy Star designation by the Environmental Protection Agency.
