New York Cares meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
New York Cares was founded in 1987 by a group of friends who wanted to take action against the serious social issues facing New York City. Like many other caring New Yorkers with demanding schedules, they searched in vain for an organization that offered flexible, hands-on volunteer opportunities. Finding none, they created New York Cares to address the problems from the ground up. Our mission: to meet pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer services.
Year, State Incorporated:
1987, NY
As the volunteer management organization that has built the capacity of New York City’s nonprofit sector for 37 years, New York Cares serves as a year-round strategic partner to 450 Community Partners – the schools and fellow 501c3 nonprofits where we develop, manage, and evaluate group volunteer programs to help our partners build their capacity to meet their missions. This year, we will mobilize our corps of 65,000 volunteers – including specially trained volunteer Team Leaders who provide oversight on projects – to serve low-income clients through programming including health and wellness; college and career readiness; economic empowerment; and community revitalization. New York Cares is a lynchpin in the nonprofit sector, building the capacity of our partners at a time when many face funding and staffing cuts. In addition to our year-round weekly programming, New York Cares also serves as a designated nonprofit partner for the NYC Office of Emergency Management, we continue to step up with critical resources in times of crisis.
