Long Island Cares brings together all available resources for the benefit of hungry and food insecure people on Long Island and to the best of our ability provides for the humanitarian needs of our community.

Long Island Cares, Inc. - The Harry Chapin Food Bank is Long Island’s first food bank founded by the late singer, songwriter and social activist, Harry Chapin in 1980.  Today it is continued by his wife and partner Sandy Chapin, a dedicated Board of Directors and talented staff working out of their 35,000 square foot facility in Hauppauge, the Center for Community Engagement in Hauppauge, and six storefront hunger assistance centers in Bethpage, Freeport, Hampton Bays, Huntington Station and Lindenhurst. Although the distribution of 12 million pounds of food annually is at the heart of Long Island Cares operations, they also operate a wide array of programs and direct services including programs for Veterans; job training, supplemental food programs for children and six Mobile Pantry, Food Truck and Outreach Units.  Long Island Cares is a member of Feeding America and is the recognized Regional Food Bank by the NYS Department of Health, Nutrition Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) and The Emergency Food Assistance Program of the USDA. (TEFAP).  In 2020 Long Island Cares was awarded Charity Navigator’s highest 4-Star rating for the 11th consecutive year.
