Stated Purpose:
Founded in 1983, Food Bank For New York City’s mission is to end hunger by organizing food, information, and support for community survival and dignity. Food Bank has been New York City’s major hunger-relief organization working to end hunger throughout the five boroughs for 35 years. Nearly one in five New Yorkers relies on Food Bank for food and other resources.

Year, State Incorporated:
1983, NY

Food Bank takes a strategic, multifaceted approach that provides meals and builds capacity in the neediest communities, while raising awareness and engagement among all New Yorkers. Food Bank’s strategic direction has expanded from focusing solely on food distribution to a broad range of anti-hunger solutions that help struggling New Yorkers feed their families, lead healthier lives, eat nutritious foods on a limited budget, and become more financially self-sufficient. Through program innovation and development of a strong member network consisting of nearly 1,000 charities and schools citywide, Food Bank’s holistic approach includes emergency food, nutrition education, and income support services, such as free tax prep, application assistance for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and financial coaching which puts resources back into the pockets of vulnerable New Yorkers, helping them to afford food and achieve greater dignity and independence. In addition, Food Bank works toward long-term solutions to food poverty through policy development and research.

For 35 years, Food Bank has distributed more than 1.2 billion meals through our member network. In addition, Food Bank’s financial empowerment programs have provided low-income New Yorkers with access to over $1 billion in public benefits, tax credits and refunds that moved them closer to food and financial security.
