Spending should be no more than 35% of related contributions on fund raising. Related contributions include donations, legacies, and other gifts received as a result of fund raising efforts.

ASH does not meet this Standard because:

  • According to its 2022 audited financial statements, the organization's fundraising costs were 42.5% ($236,507) of related contributions, which totaled $555,956.

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) aims to eliminate the harm caused by tobacco use. ASH has several principal program service activities that are designed to achieve this goal. The advocacy and policy change program advocates for evidence-based tobacco control policies at the local, state, federal, and global levels. The organization works to promote policies that reduce tobacco use, prevent youth from starting to smoke, and protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke. The research and education program provides education and training to advocates and organizations that want to learn more about human rights and tobacco control. The international collaboration works with organizations around the world to promote tobacco control policies and reduce the harm caused by tobacco use. ASH also provides technical assistance and training to international partners. Lastly, the organization's communications program uses the media to raise awareness about tobacco-related issues and trains advocates on how to use communications to promote tobacco control policies.
