The Land Trust of North Alabama meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
Our mission is to preserve North Alabama’s scenic, historic and ecological resources through conservation, advocacy, recreation and education.
Year, State Incorporated:
1987,
The Land Trust currently owns and manages over 10,000 acres of land within their service area (the ten northernmost counties of Alabama stretching from the Mississippi State line to the Georgia State line). All of the acreage is held as greenspace and provides a buffer to development, maintains the habitat of plants and wildlife, and protects fresh water resources, and, in some cases, environmentally sensitive plants and animals. In addition to providing areas for environmental protection and research, their ten Nature Preserves offer 100+ miles of public trails and recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike. Land Trust trails, open from dawn until dusk, are free to the public for hiking, biking, birdwatching, horseback riding, picnicking and disc golf. Land Trust provides the community with Outdoor Environmental Education programs to increase the communities’ awareness of the unique plants and animals, history, and culture of beautiful North Alabama. These outreach programs (attended by individuals, families, school groups, inner city programs, scout troops, church youth groups, and home school groups) reached close to 9,000 people in 2024. The Land Trust works with local corporations and other groups to coordinate employee volunteer activities that foster cooperation, communication and teamwork among co-workers while at the same time providing opportunities for participants to give back to the community in a meaningful way. Many of the Land Trust’s preserved properties are also specialized training areas for local and regional fire & rescue, search & rescue, high angle rescue, and law enforcement SWAT teams.
