Mangrove Action Project does not meet the following 1 Standards for Charity Accountability:
Standard 11 (Financial Statements)
Make available to all, on request, complete annual financial statements prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. When total annual gross income exceeds $1 million, these statements should be audited in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $1 million, a review by a certified public accountant is sufficient to meet this standard. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $250,000, an internally produced, complete financial statement is sufficient to meet this standard.
MAP does not meet this Standard because:
- Although the organization reported total revenue in the amount of $753,284 for 2023, MAP states it does not have financial statements that were reviewed by a certified public accountant (CPA).
Note from organization: "MAP bookkeeping, financial reporting, and IRS Form 990 preparation are provided by Northwest Accounting & Financial Management, a respected firm of CPAs that specializes in nonprofit accounting. Given MAP's close working relationship with NWAFM, our board has decided that the additional overhead cost of an independent financial review is not advisable at this stage of our growth."
Mangrove Action Project meets the remaining 19 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
"to partner with communities and organizations worldwide to conserve, manage, and restore mangrove forests."
Year, State Incorporated:
2003, WA
Mangrove Action Project (MAP) reports that it works to halt the global loss of mangrove forests through science-based restoration techniques and community engagement. The organization created the Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) method, an approach that prioritizes ecological functionality and natural regeneration. MAP also offers technical training, education, and capacity building for coastal communities, nongovernmental organizations, and local governments. In addition to its restoration efforts, the organization provides outreach and advocacy resources to discourage destructive coastal development and promote policy change. MAP's Coastal Education program works to inspire youth of all ages to appreciate and conserve their local mangroves through art and science in local schools. In 2023, the organization reports it had over 800 students participate in its Coastal Education program, and trained 325 forest managers, government officials, and community members in mangrove restoration.
