Legal Outreach, Inc. meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
Legal Outreach seeks to change the educational
trajectory of urban youth from under-served communities in NYC and facilitate
the pursuit of higher education by using intensive legal and educational
programs as tools for fostering vision, developing skills, and enhancing
confidence.
Year, State Incorporated:
1983, NY
Legal Outreach seeks to address the problem by intervening early in the lives of youth, implementing programs to inspire and motivate them to invest in their own educational futures, working with them consistently and continuously over the four years of high school to develop and enhance their academic skills, and providing them with the support that will allow them stay on the track leading to their goals. Rising ninth graders joining our program are inspired and motivated through participation in a “Law and Justice Institute (LJI)” – a five-week, law-based summer program held at six law schools that provides exposure to professionals and professional environments and the opportunity to engage in mock, professional activities, i.e. a criminal justice law class and a mock-trial competition. Upon completing the LJI, these students are admitted to College Bound - a four-year academic skill development and support program designed to equip them with the academic skills, disciplines, and values to succeed not only in high school but at the competitive colleges to which they are admitted upon graduation. College Bound operates after-school, on Saturdays and during the summers. Program participants, at the end of four years, will have invested approximately 2,300 hours of out-of-school time to prepare themselves for success at the next level.
