Breakthrough Louisville meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
To prepare and support talented under-resourced middle school students for greater academic success and increased confidence while introducing college students to careers in teaching. The nonprofit’s main purpose is to empower students to stay in school, succeed academically, and pursue their dreams of college or career readiness. It also strives to introduce diverse and passionate college students to the teaching profession.
Year, State Incorporated:
2000, KY
Breakthrough Louisville (formerly Summerbridge) joined Breakthrough Collaborative in 2024 as the organization was poised to expand and its missions were perfectly synched: building academic confidence and success. Its model of preparing young, diverse college students to teach in small-sized classrooms, to students who are motivated but lack the skills to compete with their more privileged peers, has a proven record of success. As a new affiliate, it is excited about its ability to support and track students' academic path to college, careers, and prosperity. Breakthrough Louisville knows that the key to student success is the relationship between student and teacher, and more specifically the power of having a teacher from a similar background as an inspiring mentor. Minority students are proven to perform better on standardized tests, have improved attendance, and are suspended less frequently when they have at least one same-race teacher. With its new affiliation, Breakthrough Louisville will have the ability to track students through high school and measure its metrics based on data and develop strategies based on these outcomes.
