Sierra Nevada Journeys meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
Science-based education programs for youth.
Year, State Incorporated:
2007, NV
At the heart of all Sierra Nevada Journeys (SNJ) programs, is the desire to create top-tiered opportunities for all children to learn science and fall in love with the natural world regardless of their socio-economic background or where they live. Annually, SNJ sees more than 32,000 participants with the following programs:
Classrooms Unleashed (CU): Combining in-class lessons led by credentialed and experienced teachers that incorporate a day-long outdoor STEM experience during which students examine and gather evidence. The program includes six different units, one for each grade, and uses hands-on, experiential and outdoor education.
Overnight Outdoor Learning (OOL): Students are immersed in outdoor, science education in a two to three night camp experiences at Grizzly Creek Ranch in Portola, CA. While the educational goals of OOL are drawn from state and national standards, SNJ digs deeper to provide Social Emotional Learning opportunities in our challenge course and team problem solving experiments.
Family STEM Nights (FSN): This unique and innovative after-school program invites kindergarten through sixth grade students, their parents, and their siblings to participate in an interactive two-hour STEM event based at school sites fostering parent engagement.
Professional Development for Teachers: Its Boot Camp opportunity helps educators from across the region seamlessly integrate science education in their multiple disciplines and provides them with confidence in teaching science aligned to the latest in educational standards.
Summer Camps: Powerful, enriching experiences that immerse campers in outdoor science learning, teamwork, and leadership, these programs promote achievement well past the campfire. Programming is delivered by qualified instructors at its fully accessible camp in Portola, CA.
