Avenues for Justice meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.

Stated Purpose:
In a nation that imprisons over a quarter million teens each year - with African American youth four times more likely and Hispanic youth 28% more likely to be incarcerated than their white peers - Avenues for Justice has provided a path forward to success for thousands of African American and Hispanic young people, preventing them from being stigmatized with a criminal record for the rest of their lives.

Incorporated in 1979, Avenues for Justice (then known as the Andrew Glover Youth Program) was one of the first alternatives to incarceration (ATI) programs for youth in the country. AFJ helped to facilitate the creation of Manhattan’s Supreme Court Youth Part where youth are prosecuted and tried separately from adults---a model now used nationwide.
Since our modest start in the Lower East Side, Avenues for Justice’s (AFJ) goal has been to keep youth and young adults out of prison through a three-fold mission to: 1. Intervene to divert and reclaim young people from lives of crime. 2. Provide an overloaded court system a reliable alternative to incarceration. 3. Make New York City a safer place for everyone.

Avenues for Justice (AFJ) provides a path forward for academic success and employment placement which leads to income stability for all of our Participants. Each Participant's path may take different turns, but we remain committed to providing individualized services to NYC’s justice impacted youth and young adults who seek our support. Through our HIRE Up program, Participants can access job readiness training and certification, academic and educational assistance, life skills and legal rights training, teen empowerment, along with mental and physical health wellness. All of these services, along with our court advocacy, prevent further involvement with the criminal justice system, lower recidivism and help prepare Participants for the workforce and maximize the likelihood that their gains are sustainable long-term.

Avenues for Justice (AFJ) serves two main groups of Participants in New York City, ages 13 to 24: 1) “Court-Involved” Participants, which includes those who have active legal proceedings, are diversion (younger participants referred by NYC Family Court for shorter mandates),are formerly incarcerated, or are in the process of reentry from a detention center; and 2) “At-Risk” Participants who are at-risk of involvement with the criminal justice system or who receive short-term assistance or referrals to third party specialists better suited to meet their needs.
