Nurses for Newborns meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
“Provides home-based services to promote the health, safety, and well-being of babies and their families. Our vision is that all babies thrive, and every baby realizes their full potential. “
Year, State Incorporated:
1992, MO
Nurses for Newborns (NFN) Core Model is a nurse home visiting program that has served this area for over 32 years as a prevention model focused on decreasing infant mortality and child abuse/neglect by improving both maternal and infant health and enhancing parenting skills. To date, Nurses for Newborns has served over 130,000 infants and their caregivers with 99% of these infants evaluated as free of a substantiated report of child abuse. NFN serves infants and their caregivers, both before and after birth, including mothers who have previously given birth. Services are focused on infants at greatest risk including medically fragile infants, teen parents and their infants, families headed by a parent or caregiver with intellectual or physical disabilities, or with a diagnosed mental illness, and infants from families facing severe poverty and limited access to care. The model is guided by NFN’s Clinical Guidelines drawn from home visiting research and the agency's extensive experience of providing effective service in Missouri and Tennessee. Embedded within NFN's core model are evidence-based screening instruments and components including Strengthening Families, Protective Factors and Healthy Families America. NFN methodology uses a multi-faceted intervention approach to identify individual maternal and infant biological, social, developmental, and psychological risk factors for child maltreatment, as well as family and environmental risks and strengths to foster child development. This approach works to reduce those risks through education, resource provision and support networking. NFN nurses conduct regular mother and child health and developmental assessments and nurses screen for co-occurring risk factors including maternal depression, everyday stress and domestic violence. Nurses then present a variety of educational topics and tools designed to address identified issues and improve parenting skills, advance appropriate infant/child development, and help parents establish access to external resources to promote the health and safety of both the mother and child. NFN's core model is augmented by NFN's clinical social work services for some clients facing mental health or environmental challenges, and by Community Health Workers who provide outreach and peer support for clients whose language or culture may present barriers to effective service delivery.
