Girl Scouts is the foremost leadership organization dedicated solely to girls. Girl Scouts mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. In Girl Scouting, girls learn: Healthy Living – through programs that promote physical, emotional and social health, sports, camping and outdoor programs. Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) – through community collaborations, girls participate in robotics competitions, build bridges, discover science and technology and explore opportunities in non-traditional career fields. Financial Literacy – through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls learn to set goals, develop business plans, budget, market and the value of team work and collaboration. Community Service - Girl Scouts are known worldwide for their tradition of helping others. At Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois, girls participate in at least two community service projects annually. Leadership – Girl Scouting provides girls many opportunities to develop leadership skills and achieve their personal goals. Annually almost 250 girls work toward earning their Girl Scout Gold, Girl Scout Silver or Girl Scout Bronze awards. Outreach Programs – Girl Scouting is for all girls, everywhere, and GSSI is committed to increasing access to girls in underserved areas. GSSI conducts In-School Scouting in partnership with East St. Louis School District 189 and in several group homes and public housing complexes in economically disadvantaged communities. Annually, GSSI provides nearly $130,000 in financial assistance and no girl is turned away due to inability to pay.
