PROGRAMS & SERVICES:
Community for New Direction (CND) responds to community needs and serves inner-city, economically distressed neighborhoods. CND provides services to youth grades K-12 through in-school, after-school, and summer programming. CND also provides mental health and substance use disorder treatment services to adults. The primary minority groups served are African Americans, Hispanics, and urban Appalachians.
In-school programs serve approximately 400 students and include mentoring and YAP (Young Ambassadors for Peace), an anti-violence and anti-bullying prevention program. CND has established collaborations and relationships with more than 20 Columbus City and Reynoldsburg Schools. Annually, about 70 elementary and middle school students attend a Vision Conference that promotes higher education and a drug-free lifestyle. Also, high school students participate in FOCUS (Future Opportunities Created for Urban Students), a 32-week leadership development group, and the Annual HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) College Tour, held during Spring break. CND after-school program includes using the Botvin Lifeskills Training (LST) evidence-based substance abuse and violence prevention curriculum. Students are provided with a hot meal and transportation to-and-from our program. Summer programming consists of a six-week Summer Day Camp for youth ages 5-14 that provides arts, recreation, and education activities for more than 200 children.
For males and females aged 14-24, CND provides intervention and case management to assist with GED completion and job readiness skills through the Columbus City APPS (Applications for Purpose, Pride and Success) violence intervention program. APPS provides individuals with strategies for violence intervention and crisis response actions that include responding to gang-related confrontation, mediating and diffusing hostile tensions.
Adults 18 and up are served through CND Mental Health & Substance Use Disorder Treatment Services, which is licensed by ODMHAS (Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and nationally accredited by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities). Services offered include counseling, mental health medication management, Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), and much more.
