Boys & Girls Haven meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.

Stated Purpose:
Boys & Girls Haven provides comprehensive services to shelter, heal, and empower youth while offering critical support to individuals and families.

Year, State Incorporated:
1948, KY

Therapeutic Foster Care – Boys & Girls Haven’s Therapeutic Foster Care consists of a supportive network of foster homes offering kids the love and stability of a family. For many of the children, this is their first experience in a consistent and safe home – their first chance to have a childhood. The nonprofit believes that every child deserves to grow up in a safe and healthy environment they can call home. Families need strong support, too. Boys & Girls Haven’s Therapeutic Foster Care provides foster parents with great training and is backed by the best resources in the field.

Residential Foster Care – Boys & Girls Haven’s Residential Foster Care is a Qualified Residential Treatment Program that serves foster youth ages 11–17. As a Qualified Residential Treatment Program, it meets the highest standards regarding care and treatment for the most vulnerable foster youth. It provides a holistic approach within the program, knowing each case is unique and each child has unique needs. It prioritizes creating a feeling of safety and stability for these children, who have endured a number of complex and adverse experiences before they reach its doors. This is a building block for healing, hope, and stable futures for these children.

Transitional Living
– An estimated 20 percent of young adults who are in care become homeless the moment they’re emancipated at the age of 18. Boys & Girls Haven’s Transitional Living Program provides a safety net and strong emotional support system for young people who are transitioning out of foster care into self-sufficiency. It provides a private, one-bedroom apartment, and on-site youth counselors provide 24/7 guidance and support. The youth have access to therapy, case management, medical assistance, and psychiatric services, as well as individualized assessments, coaching, career exposure, and access to a funnel of internships, apprenticeships, and job placements.  A weekly living allowance is provided, along with banking and budgeting support.

Independence Readiness – The Boys & Girls Haven Independence Readiness Program is designed to propel a new generation of teens in foster care toward a successful transition to adulthood. When young people “age out” of the foster care system, they gain the right to manage their own affairs, including where they will live and what they will do. In Kentucky, this happens at age 18. Legally considered adults, they may take charge of their own housing and daily-life decisions, both large and small, but will they be ready to make such decisions for themselves? Will they have the skills and basic information they need to live as independently as possible?  Independence Readiness is an innovative three-part program designed to assist youth in preparing for their future. Through a combination of life skills, mentoring, and career readiness training, Independence Readiness works to combat the high levels of joblessness, chronic homelessness, and incarceration found in youth exiting foster care.

Haven Family Counseling – Haven Family Counseling is an outpatient program of Boys & Girls Haven. Its team of professionals is committed to providing compassionate, effective interventions that help the clients achieve their goals. It specializes in addressing the behavioral and emotional needs of children, adolescents, adults, and families. It can provide intensive in-home therapy and case management, or less intensive services at the outpatient office. Sessions are also available online via the telehealth platform, so you don’t have to worry about transportation or finding the time to get to an appointment. All you need is a stable internet connection and a device to benefit from the program’s mental health counseling services. The psychiatrists, therapists, and case managers utilize effective, evidence-based interventions to help clients achieve their goals. Whether you’re dealing with a significant loss, relationship problems or just need someone to talk to — the counseling professionals are here to help. All of the mental health specialists are highly trained, licensed, and certified.

Animal-Assisted Therapy – Animal-Assisted Therapy includes activities to promote physical, occupational, and emotional growth in children who have experienced trauma. The approach empowers kids to develop practical skills on their healing journey. The program utilizes horses, pigs, dogs, and other animals in the healing process for foster youth. It fosters horses as it fosters youth—while both are waiting to find forever homes. The program is unique in the state and there are no other agencies who can provide animal-assisted therapy as it does.  Many foster children have experienced complex and developmental trauma. This program allows a safe space for the children to learn to build trusting relationships again. Animal-Assisted Therapy bridges the gap so the children can transfer the principles they learn in relating to horses to relating to trusting humans again.
