Stated Purpose:
"The mission of Girls Incorporated of St. Louis is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold by providing educational, recreational, and cultural programs to girls in a safe environment to enable them to raise their aspirations and realize their potential."
Year, State Incorporated:
1983, MO
Girls Inc. offers comprehensive center-based and outreach programs at various locations throughout St. Louis. Taking our evidence-based programs on the road, we go to schools, community centers, apartment complexes – just about any safe place kids can gather. Our center-based and outreach programs serve thousands of metropolitan St. Louis kids each year. These programs include:
PAP (Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy)
An abstinence-based program helping girls ages 9 to 18 avoid early pregnancy through communication skills, basic health education and future planning.
Friendly PEERsuasion
A two-part peer teaching program for children, ages 6 to 14 that builds skills helpful in resisting peer pressure to use harmful substances.
Kid Ability
A comprehensive safety program designed to empower children ages 4 to 13 with the skills, attitude and knowledge needed to identify and respond appropriately to any potentially unsafe situation.
Life Skills
A program emphasizing skills that promote responsible behavior in school, home and work and prepares girls for the future. The program is designed for children in grades 4 through 12 and addresses character education, which includes developing self-esteem, and communication skills through problem-solving, critical thinking, role playing, group projects and creative writing.
Financial Education
A comprehensive program that provides important financial skills for children ages 4 to 18. Students learn age-appropriate money-management skills, the importance of saving money and strategies to avoid credit pitfalls.
Bullying and Respect
A timely and interactive presentation that addresses childrens respect for themselves and others. This program includes lessons on the effects of teasing and bullying and discusses the relationships among self-esteem, confidence and intimidation.
Music and Media
This program will increase childrens awareness of the power of the media and how it can influence decision making. Television, movies, the Internet and music all influence our behavior positively and negatively.
And much, much, more!
Additional program topic areas include healthy living, science, public service and life skills.
