Big Brothers Big Sisters Of Rockland County meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
To
create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and
promise of youth.
Year, State Incorporated:
1984, NY
For over 41 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rockland County has served children and youth between the ages of 7 – 18 years in long-term, professionally supported mentoring partnerships with fully screened adult volunteers. Operating as a multi-social service organization, it provides evidence-based 1 – 1 community-wide mentoring, serving children primarily living in single parent, low-income households who can be impacted by violence or incarceration resulting in poor school performance; limited opportunity for outside activities; poor relationship development with parents; anti-social behavioral problems; lack of confidence and/or poor self-esteem. National and local studies show that children who have role models are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and friends, and less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. Students who are successful in school are less likely to drop out, abuse drugs or commit crimes. In fact, the success of children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters was proven in a nationwide randomized study.
