Also Known As:
Historic Preservation Corporation
Historic Preservation Corporation operates a museum complex of eight buildings located along the Santa Fe Trail. The 1861 Rawlinson-Terwilliger home, still stands, as when the trail was active, and houses the Trail Days Cafe & Museum. There, on display, are artifacts, photographs, an Indian Pictograph and other historic materials. Amidst artifacts and displays, food is an important experience of the 3,000 yearly visitors to the museum. Much historic research went into creating the menu which includes information of Indian and ethnic groups who settled in the area. The food is created in such a way, that it provides an historic experience, as close as possible, to tasting foods from the past. The volunteer staff interacts with visitors, educating them about history. Visitors pay for the food, but they may tour without cost. Two jars are available for donations. On the property are two 1930 tourist cabins, forerunners of motels, and a 1943 cabin, the survivor of four built on the grounds during World War ll to house Herington Army Air Field personnel. A replica historic chicken house and pen is stocked, Spring to Fall, with laying hens. The restored 1902 Field School house is visited by children and adults who learn about a country school. Educational programs are presented here for Valentines, Veterans' Day and other events. A barn was constructed around the 1858 Atkinson Log House--the oldest wooden structure in Morris County. The 1947 Baker's Food market is being converted into "Trail Days Arts & History Center", a multi-purpose auditorium, to be used for cultural, historic and Artistic educational presentations.
