St Louis ArtWorks meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
The Mission of St. Louis ArtWorks is to broaden educational and career opportunities for youth in the St. Louis region through apprenticeships in the arts and through community collaborations.
Year, State Incorporated:
1995, MO
St. Louis ArtWorks is an innovative job training program in the arts for teens. Teens are apprenticed to professional artists and work in teams developing works of art for sale, commission, and public performance. The teens receive workforce development, arts education, and life skills training, all while earning a stipend. ArtWorks was founded in 1995 by collaboration between Grand Center, Inc., the City of St. Louis, and the Regional Arts Commission. ArtWorks has offered paid internships to more than 3000 young adults (ages 14-19) who apprentice with professional artists in the development of visual, literary, and performing art. The artists and apprentices work together in teams, with each team focusing on a different artistic discipline such as print making, sculpture, textiles, etc. Participants create works of art for sale, commission, public installation, and public performance where they experience learning the business of art by working with commissioning clients. St. Louis ArtWorks received the Best in Arts Education Award from Missouri Arts Council in 2013.
ArtWorks was selected as one of the 12 recipients of the 2016 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award; an award that recognizes the nation’s best after-school and out-of-school-time creative youth development programs for using engagement in the arts and the humanities to increase academic achievement, graduation rates, and college enrollment.
Apprentices receive Life Skills Training's with presenters who lead discussions and hands-on activities on topics such as drug, alcohol, and violence prevention; environmental stewardship, career exploration; and budgeting and financial management. In addition apprentices learn presentation and public speaking skills. They learn how to greet visitors professionally and explain their work. Activities such as client meetings, open house events, and public sales give apprentices a chance to practice these skills and receive valuable feedback, encouragement, and reinforcement. These events help apprentices understand that they and their work are taken seriously and valued by their artist mentors, clients, peers, employers, and communities in St. Louis who share in their success.
