Education Through Music meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
Education Through Music (ETM) makes high-quality, in-school music education a reality for tens of thousands of children who would otherwise have limited or no exposure to the arts. We do this by partnering with under-resourced New York City schools to provide music as a core subject for all children, utilizing music education as a catalyst to improve achievement, motivation for school, and self-confidence. ETM believes that every child deserves access to high-quality music education, taught by qualified and well-trained music teachers and that music should support learning in other key areas, such as math and language arts. We have found that school music education programs create engaged parents and school communities, key to the success of students.
Year, State Incorporated:
1991, NY
ETM partners with under-resourced elementary, middle, and high schools in all five boroughs of New York City. Through our NYC Partner School Program, ETM collaborates with these schools to create comprehensive, sequential, and sustainable music programs. We do this by partnering with principals to implement a school music program that works with every child. We then hire high-quality music teachers to place with school partners, and then we provide 100+ hours of professional development to our teachers. ETM is unique in partnering with these under-resourced schools to customize their music education programs, providing weekly classes for all students as well as a path for schools to permanently hire their proven ETM music teachers. Our model is built on sustainability: Over the last ten years, 65 teachers have been hired from ETM to the New York City Department of Education.
ETM fully embeds itself in these communities, directly placing our teachers who provide weekly in-school music classes and ensemble programs (band, orchestra, choir) as part of every child’s school day. Our students are among the most in need when it comes to the benefits of music education but, unlike their peers in more affluent city schools, are the least likely to have access to it. 95% of our students come from low-income families, 95% are BIPOC, and 86% live below the poverty line, leaving ETM to support and provide music classes when the city and state cannot on their own. Our students have performed at the iconic Apollo Theater, Yankee Stadium, One World Trade Center, the Perelman Performing Arts Center, and the offices of YouTube and Warner Music. In our 32 years of in-depth work, we have offered 7.5 million hours of music education to 300,000 students in nearly 150 partner schools, eliminating gaps in access to the arts.
