National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) works to build better lives for Americans affected by mental illness through advocacy, awareness, education, and support. The organization's no-cost education programs provide families, individuals, and educators with the support and information they need about mental illness. NAMI also provides outreach programs to specific racially/ethnically diverse communities such as the Sharing Hope outreach program for the Black/African community. NAMI's advocacy program helps shape national public policy for people with mental illness and their families and equips volunteer leaders with the tools, resources and skills necessary to address mental health in all states. The organization's toll-free National HelpLine allows NAMI to respond to requests and provide free information and support. NAMI also leads public awareness events and activities, including Mental Illness Awareness Week and NAMIWalks, to fight stigma and encourage understanding.
