Maui Nui Marine Resource Council meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Stated Purpose:
"to protect and enhance the coral reefs of Maui Nui through assessment, monitoring, and restoration efforts mauka to makai."
Year, State Incorporated:
2014, HI
Maui Nui Marine Resource Council (MNMRC) reports that it works to protect and restore coral reefs and coastal ecosystems around Maui, Hawai'i, through science-based conservation, water quality monitoring, community engagements, and policy advocacy. MNMRC’s Hui O Ka Wai Ola (HOKWO) program is a community-based water quality monitoring initiative that collects data from coastal sites in leeward Maui. The organization conducts coral reef and fish surveys to assess ecosystem health and guide conservation strategies. The organization’s Reef-Friendly Landscaping program works to identify and mitigate land-based pollution sources that may impact coastal waters, then implements nature-based solutions to reduce runoff and sedimentation. Through MNMRC’s Community-Based Climate Resilience Areas (CBCRAs) program, the organization partners with local communities to support resource management and enhance reef resilience by combining traditional ecological knowledge with modern science. MNMRC also facilitates workshops, community events, and digital campaigns to engage residents and visitors on reef-friendly practices, water quality, and marine conservation. In 2023, the organization reports it captured over 800,000 images to assess reef health after the wildfire in Lahaina, piloted 18 new properties with its Reef-Friendly Landscaping program, and established eight new survey sites to monitor reef health and fish populations.
