Stated Purpose:
Urban Upbound is dedicated to breaking cycles of poverty in New York City public housing and other low-income neighborhoods. We provide underserved youth and adults with the tools and resources needed to achieve economic prosperity and self-sufficiency through eight comprehensive, integrated programs: Employment Services, College Access and Youth Development, Financial Fitness and Affordable Housing Counseling, Tax Preparation and Income Support Services, Small Business Innovation through Worker Cooperative Development, Mental Health and Wellness, Bridge2Tech, and Financial Inclusion services anchored by the Urban Upbound.
Year, State Incorporated:
2003, NY
To fulfill our mission, Urban Upbound administers eight key programs: 1) Employment Services: 1-on-1 career counseling, sector-focused job readiness training, and job placement and advancement services for unemployed and underemployed youth and adults; 2) College Access and Youth Development: college counseling, SAT preparation, college application assistance including essay tutoring and financial aid applications; 3) Financial Counseling: 1-on-1 financial counseling and group workshops focusing on increasing participant financial literacy and financial planning (increasing savings, reducing debt, building credit, and acquiring assets such as a home); 4) Income Support Services: free tax preparation to help clients maximize tax refunds by accessing all credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), and screening, enrollment and advocacy work for public benefits like SNAP; 5) Worker Cooperative Development and Business Innovation: launching and providing technical assistance to worker cooperatives and other small businesses that increase locally owned assets and resources and
create employment opportunities; 6) Mental Health & Wellness: we help children, youth and adults overcome difficult life challenges and reach their full potential through individual counseling and group work, introducing them to healthy ways of living while fighting the stigma that still exists in low-income communities; 7) the Urban Upbound Federal Credit Union; and 8) Bridge2Tech: digital skills training and workforce pathways that help participants build essential technology skills, strengthen digital literacy, and prepare for education, training, and employment opportunities in technology-related fields.
