New York City Mission Society meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.

Stated Purpose:

Since 1812, The New York City Mission Society (Mission Society) has provided vital services and programming for over 6.5 million New Yorkers. Throughout the course of our history, Mission Society has worked to end intergenerational poverty by providing transformative educational opportunities for the citys most vulnerable youth. Through dynamic programs and services that respond to community needs, Mission Society has provided the youth we serve with the academic tools to break the cycle of poverty to achieve success. Today, Mission Society offers transformative after school (OST) Out-of-School time learning, summer enrichment as well as college and career development programs for nearly 4,000 students which include new immigrants, first-time English language learners, and special youth populations (ages 5-24) in Harlem and at 12 public school programs in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Mission Society sustains its commitment to putting an end to intergenerational poverty by providing high impact educational, workforce development, and cultural enrichment programs. We attribute our longevity to our team of passionate educators and staff who are reimagining the urban learning landscape, and offering critically needed support as a next step for our children, youth, and families living in New York Citys most underserved communities.

Year, State Incorporated:
, NY

Mission has operated the Power Academy (after school), Summer Power Academy (summer enrichment) and Level Up (workforce development) programs in Harlem, Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx for more than 20 years. These programs have evolved to support nearly 800 students annually (grades K-8) through academic enrichment, cultural awareness, fitness, and youth development activities based on our award-winning, proprietary social emotional curriculum, Mission: Success; while actively providing job readiness and financial literacy to our high school and young adult students (ages 16-24). These gains are possible because in addition to the pervasive themes of literacy and STEM in our Power Academy and Level Up programs, Mission Society knows that the most effective lifelong learning practices utilize interactive activities that engage the whole child in the learning process. This "responsive" approach enables our students to participate in year-round place-based learning opportunities that encourage them to develop their critical-thinking and social emotional skills, while also gaining perspective on being involved in community engagement and academic enrichment. In addition, Mission Society also actively engages parents and guardians, provides support for local schoolteachers, and prioritizes the professional development of our own staff – nearly 60% of whom are from the communities we serve.
