Heifer Project International (HPI) works with communities to strengthen local economies and build secure livelihoods that help close the gap to living income for small-scale farmers. The organization's model focuses on building social capital by working to increase income and assets within farming families, improving their food security and nutrition, and protecting the environment. HPI provides food and income-producing livestock, as well as education about their care and feeding, to families and communities in need so that they may become self-reliant and establish sustainable livelihoods and access to food and income. The organization works to educate people worldwide about the root causes, contributors and challenges of global hunger and poverty, and to teach them how to become part of the solution. HPI also provides seeds, grains, and trees and teaches farmers and families geographically appropriate agricultural practices to enhance and increase crop productivity. Some ($4,857,557 or 5%) of HPI's programs are conducted in conjunction with informational materials that include fundraising appeals.
