Stated Purpose
"fighting kidney disease on all fronts, with programs of prevention, early detection, financial support, disease management, clinical research, innovation and advocacy."
In 2018, AKF reported that it helped more than 83,000 patients in all 50 states gain access to lifesaving healthcare, including dialysis and transplant, by providing need-based grants to pay for health insurance premiums, transportation to treatment, prescription medications and nutritional products, and emergency assistance in the wake of natural disasters. The organization also reports that it provided nearly 1,800 dialysis patients with close to $300,000 in disaster relief assistance in the wake of four major hurricanes. Patients seeking help from AKF must demonstrate financial need through completion of a grant application. AKF?s prevention program, Know Your Kidneys, combats preventable kidney disease by providing services to individuals at highest risk for CKD. Through this program, the organization offers free health screenings, nutrition and fitness presentations, follow-up services and public education materials. AKF screenings check for indicators of hypertension, diabetes and CKD. In total, the organization screened more than 11,000 people in 25 cities in 2018. AKF?s educational offerings include a website, KidneyFund.org, which had 8.7 million page views in 2018; a toll-free HelpLine; free, monthly webinars for patients and caregivers; Kidney Health Coach peer-to-peer community outreach program; and printed health education and disease management materials for people with kidney disease and kidney failure. In 2018, AKF expanded its information on the renal diet, gout, rare diseases and many other topics. The organization also registered nearly 7,000 continuing education courses completed by social workers, dialysis technicians, dietitians, health educators and other renal care professionals.
