Stated Purpose
"to protect, restore, and enhance our streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands and bays in order to ensure that every community has clean water and healthy natural resources to sustain diverse life."
CWP works to protect and restore watersheds across the nation by finding solutions to polluted and degraded water bodies through applied research in order to identify best watershed management practices. Through workshops and publications, the organization trains local planners, engineers, and watershed groups to manage their streams, rivers, wetlands, and bays. CWP also helps communities analyze local watershed conditions, assess water quality problems, and determine what specific combination of restorative practices will be most effective. The organization has developed a multi-disciplinary strategy to watershed protection that includes conducting and developing watershed management practices, encouraging watershed planning and implementation, fostering watershed learning, and building the capacity of local watershed organizations. In addition, CWP operates a membership program, the Center for Watershed Protection Association (CWPA), which is geared toward providing researchers, engineers, local governments, and NGOs with tools to practice their trade and a forum for cross-field cooperation.
