Stated Purpose
"to understand and protect chimpanzees, other apes, and their habitats, and to work towards creating an informed and compassionate critical mass of people who will help to create a better world for people, other animals, and our shared environment."
The Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife, Research, Education and Conservation (JGI) contributes to the preservation of great apes and their habitats through conservation, education and promotion of sustainable livelihoods in local communities. The organization improves global understanding and treatment of great apes through research, public education and advocacy, and engages a worldwide network of young people who take action on behalf of humans, animals, and the environment. Conservation activities aim to ensure the long-term conservation of wildlife habitats, including reforestation and a community-centered conservation program. Animal welfare activities aim to ensure the physical and psychological well-being of animals in general, particularly chimpanzees. Education efforts strive to heighten global awareness of the issues facing wild and captive great apes, and include Dr. Goodall's United States tours, educating policymakers, and Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots program, the organization's global environmental and humanitarian youth program. Communications efforts promote JGI's work to the general public and informs, in updates, progress and outcomes concerning conservation and development, wildlife research, and humanitarian and environmental education. Some ($1,319,643 or 8%) of JGI's programs are conducted in conjunction with informational materials that include fundraising appeals.
