Stated Purpose:
"The Amarillo Symphony
inspires, educates, and unites this region through the power of music."
Year, State Incorporated:
1924, TX
Also Known As:
Amarillo Symphony, Inc.
Celebrating 100 seasons of musical excellence in 2023-2024, the Amarillo Symphony is the largest and most active performing arts organization in the Panhandle. It was founded in 1924 as a 12-piece ensemble called the Philharmonic Club.
By the late 1960s, the Philharmonic had officially changed its name to the Amarillo Symphony, and in 1968 it began playing in the Amarillo Civic Center Auditorium, where it remained for almost four decades. Aiding them was the Symphony Guild, founded in 1955 to improve community and financial support. Through the remainder of the twentieth century, the Symphony increased its ranks of musicians, raised its artistic level, and established outstanding community and educational programs. In 2006, it made its debut in the world-class Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts.
In addition to seven concert series, the Symphony performs two Holiday Pops concerts and a Hodgetown Pops Concert. It also sponsors the Amarillo Symphony Youth Orchestra program and has several additional education programs that reach over 16,000 students across the Panhandle each year. In addition, the Symphony partners with the Lone Star Ballet to present The Nutcracker Ballet and regularly seeks opportunities to collaborate with Amarillo's many other outstanding arts organizations. In recent years, the Amarillo Symphony family has grown to include the Greater Southwest Music Festival, a cherished Amarillo music festival, and Chamber Music Amarillo, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
